Husband and Wife Shot by Border Agents in Portland 1 Day After Woman Shot and Ki-lled by ICE in Minneapolis

Federal agents were involved in a shooting of two people in Portland, Ore., on Thursday, Jan. 8, local police said.

The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) responded to a call at 2:18 p.m. local time, with reports that a man and woman had both sustained “apparent gunshot wounds,” .

Minutes later, at 2:24 p.m., the man who was shot called for help. Upon arrival, officers found the injured man and woman, and the officers applied a tourniquet and recruited help from emergency medical personnel, per the release from PPB.

“Officers confirmed that federal agents had been involved in a shooting,” police said, adding that local police “were not involved in the incident.”

The two victims were transported to the hospital. Their conditions are unknown. The FBI reportedly responded to the scene.

After a City Council meeting, District 1 Councilor Jamie Dunphy said the wounded people are husband and wife, reports The Register-Guard. A source also told CNN the two were husband and wife.

“When agents identified themselves to the vehicle occupants, the driver weaponized his vehicle and attempted to run over the law enforcement agents,” a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement to PEOPLE. “Fearing for his life and safety, an agent fired defensive shots. The driver drove off with the passenger, fleeing the scene. This situation is evolving and more information is forthcoming.”

An investigation is underway, and the department is “still in the early stages of this incident,” Portland Police Chief Bob Day said.

The statement also said that while the PPB is “responsible for maintaining public safety and enforcing state laws,” the bureau “does not engage in immigration enforcement as outlined in PPB Directive 810.10.”

“We understand the heightened emotion and tension many are feeling in the wake of the shooting in Minneapolis, but I am asking the community to remain calm as we work to learn more,” Day said.

During a press conference, Day said he did not know the identities or the conditions of the people who were shot and he has been in communication with the FBI.

The shooting in Portland comes one day after the death of Renee Nicole Good, who was fatally shot by ICE officer Jonathan Ross in Minneapolis . The 37-year-old mother’s death was captured on multiple bystander videos.

On Wednesday, Jan. 7, Good was seen reversing her Honda Pilot as ICE agents attempted to open her car door, then moving forward and to the right when the agent opened fire, first through the windshield and then twice through the vehicle’s open window, k*illing Good.

The masked agent can be seen on video going to the scene where Good’s car crashed into another, then walking away, getting into an SUV and leaving the area.

Following Good’s death, people across the Twin Cities engaged in large-scale protests against ICE on both Wednesday and Thursday.
